I saw her runnin' down the hard sand
playin' "catch me!" with the sea
Raise her skirts up to the skies
and turn her other cheek to the moon.
I said Please baby, now don't you know?
I don't think i should be left alone
I said Please baby, now don't you know?
I think you ought to take me home.
Now your papa just don't like me
& your mama says I'm no good
They say i'm gonna leave you
with a hand full a gimmie
& a mouth full of much obliged.

This song is for those brave souls in mixed
& star-crossed relationships, facing their parents,
in-laws & uptight social ignorance.
A true story circa '66 about my friend, GB, in love
with a U. Penn. lass - she was also a friend and
jewish which GB was not, and hence she becomes
the heroine of the ironically titled song.
I first heard GB utter the "hand full of gimmie"
phrase when he returned from meeting her parents
at the Hamptons. Finally, after years of fine tuning,
I have the setting, the girl and the phrase, probably
from the great Buddy Bolton, in one song. Wherever
you are sailing on "Tess" GB, clear seas and
a strong anchor in the rodes. Life's a beach,
the girl's a beach & Yes, brother Rodger, god's a beach. Phil's mandolin, Jan's guitar, Yiming's violin,
now that's gospel.
